Rene Hardey
Coach’s Thoughts: Rene is the kind of athlete who makes coaching rewarding — reliable, hardworking, and genuinely eager to improve. His consistency in showing up and his positive mindset stand out every week. Even after a serious shoulder injury, he’s stayed focused on recovery and continues to make impressive gains in mobility and strength. Rene is always open to coaching, communicates well about how he’s feeling, and takes feedback as an opportunity to grow. He’s self-aware, determined, and a true example of being “happy, hungry, and humble.” His steady progress and attitude toward learning set the tone for everyone around him.
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I joined in Sept of 2024 and it's my first time doing CrossFit. I used to do a boxing cardio class with weights and bodyweight calisthenics for about 18 years. But since moving to Detroit in 2018, it's too far to go to that gym. And when I tore a tendon in my shoulder 2 years ago I had to take time off from any hard workouts. But I knew I needed to get back into the gym for my mental health.
Favorite Movement?
Squat Cleans, the only movement I feel I'm doing properly and is difficult.
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?
I was hesitant given my slight shoulder injury but walked in and talked to Clint and he explained I can still workout and the coaches will be made aware of it and alter the workouts to not reinjure my shoulder. So that gave me confidence to get back into a routine and start getting back on track. The key to health is good habits and I'm glad I've found this good habit! So my advice is to walk in and talk to one of the coaches and explain your fears.
Favorite thing about CCF?
The coaching staff and the close proximity to my home.
What do you do when you’re not at CCF (job, hobbies, other fitness, etc)?
I'm pretty active, I bike around the city a lot, golf, water sports, skier and snowboarder. I'm kind of a foodie so I love checking out unique restaurants. Detroit Sporting events for sure! I have been with Ford Motor over 31 years in prototype manufacturing and plan to retire soon and start traveling.
What is your next big fitness goal?
Prior to my injury I used to be able to do muscle ups so I want to be able to do at least 3 in a row like before and I also used to be able to climb the rope without using my feet and in an L position, so that's my other goal.
