September 2025 Athlete of the Month

Fred Macatula

Coach’s Thoughts:  Fred has been pure sunshine since the day he stepped through our doors. He is always smiling and somehow has made friends with everyone within five minutes. He shows up ready to work hard, eager to learn, and has never seen an after party he doesn’t like. Fred has made it a point  to try different class times just so he can meet as many people as possible. Our community is brighter and a whole lot more fun because you’re here! Congratulations on ATOM, we’re lucky to have you!

  1. How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I have been doing CrossFit on and off for 9 years. Really got into it in the past five years but still in and off then. Now I'm really committed.

  2. Favorite Movement?

Favorite movement is the Clean!!! Literally all oly movements look and feel cool as heck, but this is the one I feel the most comfortable with and am least afraid pushing the hardest on.

  3. What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?

  4. Don't be intimidated; everyone is pretty awesome in their own ways. Say hey to as many people as you can and really delve into the community because everyone is always rooting for you. We all just want everyone to be the best they can be.

  5. Favorite thing about CCF?

I love love love the people!! The other athletes are really friendly, cool, and their energy is infectious! The coaches are so smart, encouraging, and really know how to the pull the most out of me. I'm also so very proud to be part of a box that gives so much back to the community. It feels good giving my money to an establishment that cares beyond just making profit.

  6. What do you do when you’re not at CCF (job, hobbies, other fitness, etc)?

I'm an engineer for a medical device company. For fun, I mostly like to game (whether board or video) with friends, but I also love learning new things to build the brain, e.g., knitting, programming, sailing, etc. For fitness outside of CrossFit, I like regular old lifting at the plain gyms as well as a bunch of non-ball (I have no hand-eye coordination) sports like snowboarding, skiing, long boarding, rock climbing, biking, swimming, etc.

  7. What is your next big fitness goal?

In CrossFit specifically: a singular muscle up, handstand without the wall, a singular strict handstand push up, normal speed double unders, and a competition.

In general fitness: another sprint tri, a half marathon, a hyrox, a full Olympic tri, and the battle at Waterloo.
