February 2024 Athlete of the Month

Erin Carnes

Coach’s Thoughts:  Erin is a steady participant of the 6:30 morning crew.  She pushes herself in choosing challenging weights for workouts.  Erin continues to get stronger by building on her strength capacity during the strength components of class.  She is very receptive to feedback and is eager to learn so that she can move correctly and also efficiently.  No doubt with Erin putting in the work she will use CrossFit to her advantage in her longevity goals and kick butt well into the future!  Congrats, Erin!

  1. How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Oooh, I've been doing CrossFit since 2009...ahem, 15 years, eek! I originally got started because I was traveling to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and was looking for a way to get in better shape other than just running.

  2. Favorite Movement

Cleans, but a close second is rowing, deadlifts, box jumps, and double-unders. Everything else feels really hard!

  3. What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?

CrossFit has shown me that incorporating something challenging into your day makes life better.

Being involved with CrossFit over the years has taught me a lot about myself, and if you get out of your own way, CrossFit can be whatever you need right now: you might be healing from an injury or haven't worked out in a long time and want to become strong and capable, or you like to be competitive and really challenge yourself physically, or maybe you simply need community and accountability and to have movement in your life.

CrossFit has been each of those things to me at different points on my journey.

I skipped my first class cause I was nervous, but I showed up the next day and apparently never looked back.

  4. Favorite thing about CCF?

The way CCF really works to incorporate/welcome this city and community into the gym. I have been a member of over 13 gyms, and often, they can feel elite and unwelcoming and retain only a specific type of person. I want to walk in the door and see the people of the city where I live, and I believe CCF is striving for that as much as possible.

  5. What do you do when you’re not at CCF (job, hobbies, other fitness, etc)?

For work, I am in graphic design/marketing and a photographer. During my non-working hours, I love to thrift shop and spend many hours with friends at coffee shops. I'm an extensive traveler, and I love getting to know all of the activities and fun happenings in Detroit.

  6. What is your next big fitness goal?

I'm at the point where I go to CrossFit for longevity goals, I want to feel well and move well for the next 50+ years. My short-term goal is to show up at least 4 times a week again. *maybe being athlete of the month will be my motivator ;)
